'Princess' gives up being regal to seduce

June 18, 2009 | 12:20 pm

Riviera

Most people know the family-entertainment concept in Vegas failed long before I moved here a decade ago. Those who do not know that learn quickly. I don't know how I missed the news release on this one. But I did. So, I will just quote Mike Weatherford's column today:

"The single-named Scarlett does an about-face from a family-friendly afternoon act to a 10 p.m. show with topless dancers at the Riviera starting July 1. She trades her 'Princess of Magic' handle for the new billing of 'Scarlett and her Seductive Ladies of Magic.'"

In Vegas: Skeptic Randi Vs. Psychic Edward

January 5, 2007 | 11:17 am
Las Vegas is gearing up for the Consumer Electronics Show (January 8-11) with Keynote-Speaker-For -Life Bill Gates, which is expected to draw 150,000 people. But I am writing the Sunday Calendar column on a much tinier convention at the Riviera, The Amazing Meeting 5 (TAM 5), that will break its attendance record if it hits 1,000 people. Earlier this morning I interviewed  James "The Amazing" Randi for that column. Randi is a retired magician whose foundation is behind TAM 5; he is famous for offering a million dollar challenge to anyone who can prove supernatural power. Randi was upset when we spoke with CNN's Glenn Beck for an interview with John Edward. Apparently, though Beck asked Edward why the psychic hasn't taken Randi's million dollars the host allowed Edward to sidestep answering the question. Interestingly, I have heard rumors that Edward is sniffing around for a showroom in Vegas. Anyone else thinking let's do this on pay-per-view?

'Splash' to Close at End of Month

September 22, 2006 | 11:46 am

It's official: cheesy show revue "Splash," which has been at the Riviera since 1985, is closing. The press release is stunningly succinct, with no backslapping or hubbub for a show that has lasted two decades on the Strip:

"'Splash' will officially close on Oct. 1, 2006. The last performance will be Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006."

Last year "Splash" celebrated its 20th anniversary by having its creator revamp the show.

No One Else Wants to buy Us! Honest! Look at the numbers: We Suck!

May 3, 2006 |  7:12 am
Rivierahotel_ixbtzync_1 Most companies would be thrilled when their stock shoots up. That should be especially true for the rulers of the Riviera who announced that in their first quarter down is gambling revenue, operating cash flow, net revenue and earnings per share. This should surprise no one since on its last earnings report a Riv executive blamed similarly poor numbers on the property's played-out production shows "Splash" and "Crazy Girls": both of which are still open and not getting any better. So, why is Riviera Chairman Bill Westerman so unhappy that the stock for his company has shot up to $21 a share despite the continuing lackluster performance of the property? You see the Riv had announced a deal (reported earlier on the Buffet) to be sold at $17 a share to a private investment group called Riv Acquisition Holdings. Since that deal was announced, a huge bidding war has broken out over the similarly old and played out Tropicana.
But after the initial deal was announced to buy the Trop, three other suitors swept in with competing offers. And while that fight continues to sort itself out at the Trop, one thing is clear:  the numbers keep going up on that purchase price with each new offer and counteroffer. All of this, of course, has one of the Riv's major share holders (the D. E. Shaw Group) convinced that the Riv must be worth more, too. Westerman, however, insists it is not worth any more than that original $17 a share, telling the Review-Journal: "No credible offers for Riviera have emerged from any other party at any price."
