Mariah Carey toasts gay couple during onstage Vegas proposal
Gay marriage isn't legal in Nevada, although domestic partnerships were recently approved. But divas make their own law.
Plus, there's nothing to stop you from proposing while in Vegas.
In this really charming video from Saturday night at the Pearl at the Palms, Mariah Carey's views on gay marriage are apparent -- and they're nothing like those expressed by Miss California Carrie Prejean at Planet Hollywood during the Miss USA contest earlier this year.
UPDATE: I just spoke
by phone to Maurie Sherman, 31, of Toronto who proposes in this
video to his now-fiance, Mathew Almeida. Gay marriage is legal where they live,
and so they will in fact be married. "I wish we could have married in
Las Vegas. I think Las Vegas would make a lot of money from allowing [gay] marriage," Sherman said. Many locals and casino companies would agree with that
assessment. But Nevada has a "Defense of Marriage Act"
passed by voters from the entire state, not just Las
Vegas.
Anyway, I asked Sherman
what his hook-up was to arrange his on stage proposal at Saturday night's
Mariah Carey concert at the Palms. He did not have one. According to Sherman,
he spent six months working to arrange what you see in the clip, and
he bombarded everyone from the Palms to Perez Hilton, until he finally got
the ear of Mariah Carey's management company. And, even then, nothing was for
sure:
"I worked as hard
as I can to make it happen. Everyone loved the idea. But no one made
promises. I did not find out until five minutes before the concert started. Her
security came over and talked to me. 'I think we are going to do this. And, I
think it will be during the show on stage.' I did not know before that
moment. But I came prepared. I dressed nicely and brought the candy ring in my
pocket and made sure it didn't break. Mathew had no idea. Please let me add
thanks to Mariah for doing it."

Do we honestly care what some low-moral 'diva' thinks about morality? Of course, she going to support immorality!

Thanks for reading, Steve. You can really watch this and only see immorality? I appreciate your honesty. But I think this clip has so many merits, and I see two people and one lady helping fulfill a dream. It is among other things a very Vegas moment that way. Of course, if you see immorality in this, we can go over to the Spearmint Rhino one night and count wedding rings. A lot happens in Vegas that is dark. This is a moment of light. Yrs., Richard

Mariah Carey's is so funny, she not only takes a sip, but drinks the ENTIRE glass. She is so Liza, The cd is much better than the sales it has received. STANDING O is a club anthem waiting to happen. STANDING O is for all the lying cheating fools out that.....Thanks Mariah for writing this song.

Beautiful! My admiration for Mariah just went up one thousand percent. And I was already a fan. Congrats to the happy couple.

Thank goodness Nevada now has a domestic partnership law. It's not marriage, but it's a step.

What will that publicity ho come up with next? Anything to sell an album its sad. Mariah is a user nothing more to bad most don't see her for what she really is. One minute its a fake fight with a rapper or putting down a legend like Madonna or using gay people to get press, marry an old man who happens to be a CEO of a record label to get payola $1 singles I have never seen any one use so many scams to get a hit, her only real talent was her voice which is not so good anymore.

I dont understand who gave other people to judge what is "right" or "wrong" ...I believe two people in love has equal rights like any other, they dont mean any harm. Asif, str8 marriages has lasted that long ...divorce cases in the younger generation is rising (noting to be proud of really). Mariah fulfilled the dream of these two lovers whats wrong wit dat??! I do appreciate and glad to see Legend like her who actually has nothing against "same-sex marraige" Everyone has their own rights, they made their own decision who are we to stop?! Best of luck to the couples and Bravo Mariah!

Steve open you eyes, if being born gay makes you immoral you have a lot to learn. Go back to school and get a real education based on Scientific fact, and stop believing on the fiction you get from your bible.

I was at the Palms Concert Saturday and can say A. her voice has never been better, B. It was no publicity stunt, Mariah has a very impromtu stage presence and just goes with the flow, very natural and down to earth. C. Nevada has legalized prostitution but banned gay marriage, what a joke!
Legalizing gay marriage is not a moral or religious issue: very simple, it is a state liscense issue (like getting a drivers liscence.)

Good grief, it's so sad that you can't write a post about a proposal without some type of hate. Honestly, if you hate Mariah and then gays then perhaps you can skip over this post. Tired of the all the hate and people who suck life out of everything. I'm not a big Mariah fan but the story about how this came off was interesting to me. After I watched the clip, I had a smile on my face. Thanks Richard!!

People are always full of hate. Let others be happy the way the want. I think this video is just really amusing. Nothing wrong with it. Mariah is a great person and is famous because of her talent as a singer and songwriter. Seriously, mariah has NEVER been known internationally for any scandal or stunt, just because she is an amazing singer.

This is sad how you gay-marraige bashers are hating on two people who LOVE each other.
It's funny how it'd be alright with most of you haters if these two joined the armed services and were killing people.
Far too many people love masculinity and despise anything that resembles a feminine side of humankind.
We need more LOVE in this world. Let the gays marry.
I am proud to be a MIMI fan. She looks sincere and relaxed in this video. She seems to understand the struggles which minorities face. God bless her!

What a beautiful moment that I am honored to have witnessed. Thank you to Mariah; I think even more highly of you after this!!

Awwwwwwww!!
They both looked fabulous, and I'm proud of those two. I hope they live a long, prosperous life with each other. Same sex couples exhibit great resilience in their relationships facing a world of hatred and people who are against them, it takes a great love to marry.
My hat is off to Mariah Carey, who loves equality so much as to demonstratrate that there is no barrier to love.
Vive l'amour.

Richard: It's all gay marriage all the time on your blog (I count the Rush Limbaugh piece below). You have made your position on this topic well-known. I have enjoyed reading your writing and comments on Vegas in the past, but I will not be reading in the future because I can't take the politics. All the best.
Posted by: Chuck | October 13, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Chuck thanks for reading me, until now. I am sorry you feel like you do. I absolutely was surprised the comments on Limbaugh took an ideological cast. Being a Vegas person, I was expecting people to articulate what I was thinking: Miss USA wants to be edgier and goes for Perez Hilton and Miss America is more conservative and picked Rush Limbaugh. Celebrity is non-partisan in Vegas. Both are entertainers and based on the press they were able to generate for something as anachronistic as a beauty pageant, both seem good choices. Yrs., Richard.

What will that publicity ho come up with next? - She's a celebrity, of course she will do publicity...
to bad most don't see her for what she really is - And you know her so well, how?
legend like Madonna - Legend my ass.
I have never seen any one use so many scams to get a hit - You are probably a Lady Gaga fan..Which automatically eliminated you from having any taste in music
her only real talent was her voice which is not so good anymore - It's better than ever
