XXX Church: saving the porn convention

11:42 AM PT, Jan 7 2009
Craiggross In August, Craig Gross (right, with Mike Foster) moved his XXX Church to Las Vegas. And, as in previous years, he and his followers will have a booth set up at the Adult Entertainment Expo, trying to save the souls of porn industry performers and fans. I reached him by phone last night to talk over his plans for the 2009 convention.

Richard Abowitz: How many times have you now participated at the Adult Entertainment Expo?

Craig Gross: This is our sixth year doing the show.

Abowitz: What is it about this convention that brings you out each year?

Gross: As far as the porn world, this is the show of shows. You got to be in Vegas and now we have moved to Vegas. So, we can't miss it.

Abowitz: Have you ever "saved" a porn star at this convention?

Gross: I wouldn't say at the show or on the floor we save people. We use the show as an opportunity to get the word out. If people want to talk to us about leaving the industry, we are going to want to talk to people. A lot of relationships are started there.

Abowitz: Do you get the space for free or do you pay the porn people to be at the convention?

Gross: Honestly, nothing in porn is free. We pay. We have been at the show long enough that we get a good space, and this year we will have a bigger booth than ever. In the early years we stood out but now people expect to see us and wonder what we are doing this year.

Abowitz: Have you gotten a better sense of the porn world from working this convention year after year?

Gross: Yes, definitely. A lot of people instantly write people off because they are in porn. We discover a lot of spiritual people there who find themselves in the porn industry or at a porn show. A lot of people are scared of talking to people who don't believe as they do. We love to have conversations and be available to people. These are good, normal people. Once you see it and are there at the show, a lot of the hype goes away. It is just people like at the car show, or building show, but with less clothing.

Abowitz: But don't you think these people are going to Hell?

Gross: I don't. It is not my call to make. I screw up everyday in the things I do, and I am not a porn star. And I don't feel better than someone who is in porn. Everyone is on their own journey. As I said before, I meet a number of spiritual people, many with church backgrounds, and some of them are in porn. They are trying to figure things out. We have a saying, "Jesus loves porn stars," and that catches people off guard. I am not saying Jesus is into porn, but he loves you no matter who you are. There is nothing you can do or have done that will make him love you any less. They are used to crazies with signs that say things like repent or you are going to go to Hell. We don't do that. It is not that we are for porn. But we understand and, more importantly, there is a God that understands and loves them.

Abowitz: Do you get a backlash from other Christian groups with this view?

Gross: We have in the past. The first misconception is we want to be around porn. People in the church wait for you to fall. There is a long history of Christians speaking out against porn and then falling. Look at Ted Haggard. But we still have to get in the game. This isn't off limits. You can't blame the dark for being dark, you need to blame the light for not shining on the dark.  But we still get more resistance from the church than the porn industry.

Porn exists to comfort us in our knowledge that there is no god. There is also plenty of porn in the bible.

A Christian booth at a porn convention is probably the last thing anyone would expect to see.

I think these people have amazing courage to try and reach out to people at this convention.

Its true, Jesus does love porn stars. Their sin isn't any worse than mine or yours in God's eyes. This is all just a matter of changing your lifestyle.

These guys have amazing courage to be doing what they are doing, and they are right. God loves porn stars just as much as he loves anyone else.
People probably stereotype people in the porn industry as wanting nothing to do with God or religion, but this isn't true. They just need someone to reach out to them. Their lifestyle choice may be bad, but they are no different from any other sinner in God's eyes.

I have always appreciated XXX Church. As Christians we need to be true to what the Bible teaches and not put extra rules or judgments on people that do not exist in scripture. It astounds me that Jesus would hang out on a daily basis with prostitutes and others that society deemed low class and yet certain people in the Church wants to give these guys a hard time. I minister to gay people, as I am gay. Prostitution, pornography and homosexuality do not prevent you from salvation. Once a person is saved, then God will make the changes in their lives that He deems necessary on His time schedule. We need to plant seeds of truth, water someone else's and God makes them grow. XXX Church - keep up the good work.

I read this out of curiosity like everyone but in reference to the negative impact porn made upon my life via others. This person sounds grounded & sincere & I wish the article was longer in more depth about their work. Not having always been so good myself I understand how good people can be involved in a bad life but look towards when they are out of it & cna get out of it with help rom other people. The 1st need is more understanding & tolerance from those not in 'the Life' which in turn can be a influence by a good person. We can't expect people to turn around their lives & become good people without close role models & good breaks. Good {from the word God} Luck with your work helping others.

ps I hope you save my X but since he was from a very religous family with messed up sexual mores...... Good Luck again

These guys are doing what Jesus did, loving the sinner (not the sin). He was accused of hanging out with drunks, prostitutes and worse. Something the church does not quite understand, back then and even now. Love, it's all about His unconditional love...

It's refreshing to read about someone who believes in the Christian Religion/Jesus and who doesn't use that belief system as a means to judge others. Most Christians I am acquainted with use the church as a platform of hate. (See the movie Jesus Camp!).

Yeah, I met some brothers in Alaska who were total Jesus stoners. They would get people high and take them in their tent to sing songs.

Very strange. A sucker is born everyday. At least they are nice at XXX Church. Kind of cool.

My company Advanced Precision Engineering or APE as we call it a lot now is a big lover of the porn industry shows these days. It's much more profitable than my stupid dog food extruder. And, more fun too

These same bible thumpers would throw their life savings into getting proposition 8 passed so their kindness tends to be rather illusory: straight porn actors need saving, the gay porn actors can die of AIDS because they are condemned from on High, the Lord don't like 'em. And heaven forbid they try and get married, God hates that! Why you ask? Cuz it says so in the Bible!!! Now go on and cross yourself and stomp on gay rights with steel-toed boots, that is just doing the Lord's work.

To commentor Shiny: You are way too judgemental AND lacking in knowledge. When you accept Jesus and ask Him to Guide you, doesn't matter if you are gay or a porn addict. The XXX Church cannot save people, but they CAN guide people to the Light of Jesus Christ who Saves, and THAT is their goal. What they are doing is NOT a waste of time! YOU, on the other hand, have a real smug and misguided attitude that isn't helping anyone, including YOU! I would love to face off with you ANY DAY in a serious discussion about this matter. Btw, Jesus loves YOU TOO! But I am sure He doesn't like your attitude!
