Do I want to be Criss Angel?

January 1, 2009 |  8:52 am

I was not going to write about Criss Angel's taped interview on Larry King that aired earlier this week. But a number of people have asked me about Angel's quote that he "could care less about what critics think." Angel then continued, "Critics, in my opinion, are wannabes that have never -- will never be." He has more to say and seems sufficiently irritated by critics to undermine his proclaimed indifference.  His girlfriend dismisses us as "haters."

So, let me put it out there: Not a single atom in this Richard Abowitz body has any desire to be Criss Angel or star in any Cirque show -- not even the good ones.

So, how does Angel explain the shows that this critic loves in Vegas, including a number of  headliners such as Elton John, Penn & Teller and Wayne Brady? In fact, if I had to be any Strip headliner I would want to be Elton John, who decade after decade has created art that I admire, including his  wonderful yet neglected disc "The Captain & the Kid" (2006). One of the things that is great about being a critic is to point out a neglected disc like "Captain & the Kid."  Go check it out.

Still, there are limits. As much as I admire Elton John, I would never want to be in "The Red Piano." I just enjoy watching a great Vegas show. In fact, what critics are doing is not speaking to performers like Elton John or Angel at all, but writing for fellow potential audience members informing them about the quality of a show.

But for those in doubt here are some other reasons I do not want to be Criss Angel, off the top of my head:

1. An aversion to wearing jewelry.

2. I loved being a teenager, but I do not like spending time around them as an adult and, as a writer, I would have a hard time not feeling silly writing stuff meant to appeal to them in my 40s.

3. I dislike being recognized in public.

4. The Groundhog Day lifestyle of all those nights in casino nightclubs picking up B-list celebrities and getting trivial mentions in gossip columns.

5. If I am lucky, doing the same show night after night, and year after year for a decade.

I am not trying to be funny, just honest. The reality is that most of us who write about Vegas shows want the shows to be great. We have to see them a lot for work. We are also fans of great shows. That is why we do what we do. And the truth is that having to tell people when a show turns out as disastrously as "Criss Angel Believe" is one of the harder parts of my job.

Ms. Madison is nothing more than a gold digger looking for her next sugardaddy.

For Criss to imply to Larry King by way of hand gesture that his wife is going after him for all his money all while he is sitting aside with the world's most well-known golddigger is just laughable at best.

One day Holly Madison will need to learn what its like to work a real 9-5 job. The way I see it Holly's only job was and still is the oldest profession of us women. Holly Madison has made her
her claim to fame by performing sex acts for an elderly man who is King of Playboy empire and without him she'd still be working at Hooters.

Criss humiliated his wife but talks so highly of his high class call girl girfriend amongst several milliion viewers is a complete joke at best, hysterical. I laughed so hard I almost died.

I was never into Criss for his magic. I just thought that he was incredibly sexy the first time I came upon Mindfreak about 2 1/2 years ago. I am getting ready to turn 40, so it was nice to actually find some one my age who I could go Ga-Ga over like a teeny bopper. I thought he came across as a caring, loving and humble family man. He loved his wife and mother very much. NOW... I just don;t think of him, period. When I do read about him, I actually get embarrassed for him. I feel disappointed, and a little betrayed by believing in him. Ironic that that is the name of his Vegas show. I feel badly for his ex- wife. I wish her happiness. I do hope he also finds love and happiness. He needs to watch his own re-runs of Mindfreak, and maybe he will be reminded of why people fell in love with him. It is hard to "Believe" in someone who is soooo "UNbelievable".
Thanks.

Very well said, Richard. I totally agree with everything you said. And I am happy to note that you stick to the truth, dissect all this double talk and report the stuff as it really is. It's too bad that people around the U.S. (and the world) see the Criss Angel as he portrays himself on the Larry King Show...when it's not the case at all.

I caught snippets of transcripts from that Larry King Show. There were parts in it that made me want to puke. I thought it was interesting to note that, not only were Criss Angel's comments interpreted how he wanted them interpreted with half truths and blatant lies, and Larry King appeared to be very, very fair in his interview, but there were about three or four times when he confronted Criss Angel about supposed problems with his screwy show in Las Vegas, but he let Criss Angel blather some stupid excuse, and then he backed off and didn't question him anymore by going into particulars. Larry King appeared to be more interested in being friends with Criss Angel and exploit him for the sake of the ratings of his show than to find out the truth. But oh well... That's show business. Larry King has to do more shows and he chooses to remain friends with Criss Angel...because he probably wants him back on the show again sometime in the future. Larry King could care less if Las Vegas entertainment suffers and tourists get ripped off from false advertising.

It has ALWAYS been my contention that the critics, be they from the news or from a paying audience, should be paid attention to. And they have all chimed in and overwhelmingly stated this show lacks and is soooooooo bad. People need to make sure they DON'T listen to shills who are paid by the show, to Criss Angel himself, to his dumb blonde Playboy girlfiend who enjoys luxuriating in her pampered expensive lifestyle (she has to protect her sugar daddy, you know....) nor to blind unquestioning follower Loyals. You listen to these people and go to this show without checking unbiased, impartial reviews, you WILL be ripped off.

Criss Angel can lash out at news journalists and theater critics all he wants. I just hope he don't go off the deep end and threaten another reporter. Like he did to Norm Clarke back in April 2008. In his greedy thinking, everyone is at fault except for him, especially when it effects his huge ego and ability to make mucho deneiro. And that way of thinking on his part will not end. Eventually, it will all work itself out.

What will happen is Richard will still be here in Las Vegas reporting on things. And hopefully reporting on shows that are good and prove to be entertaining and enjoyable to report on. On the other hand, Criss Angel will be gone. And that will be WAY before a ten year run of BeLIEve. Then and only then will Criss Angel understand that he was only fooling himself.

MIND BODY SPIRIT
3 words Criss Angel used to market his brand, his stage persona

ARROGANT MANIPULATIVE CONTROLLING
Pre-recording of the Larry King Live show 12/29/08.

First, since when does the Larry King Live show air a prerecorded interview on its first airing? My guess, Criss Angel wanted it that way in order to control the interview and the environment. No welcoming any unwanted questions.

Second, since when does Criss Angel ever had any of his girlfriends or wife sitting aside of him during an interview while discussing his career? My guess, to display how a struggling magician finally made it and to the top of his field and as a bonus, got himself a famous well-known Playboy bunny as major eye candy to flaunt.

As for the Playboy bunny, she appeared rather quiet and controlled. My guess, Criss Angel had her well-guided prior to that interview.
Kudos to her. She came off like a well-trained dog at a dog show.
She deserves the winning bow.

Now how is his show BELIEVE doing? It sucks and it will continue to suck because all his efforts are being pointed in the wrong direction.
Sad to see in this current economy that more people will be out of work once the BELIEVE show ends.

i've never bin much of a criss angel fan, and i had a chance to see the show at the luxor recently, and i thought it was very good, my friends enjoyed it as well. what i'm finding is that too many people care about the mans personal life, i don't know why, and for those that don't like him, don't like the show either. why cant u people live and let live, over all most people like the show and criss angel very much

too many people care about the mans personal life

LMFAO
The only reason why people are talking about Criss Angel's personal life is because Criss Angel WANTS everyone too. Why else does he make sure to go out of his way to make sure he makes all the news globally, has his girlfriend in the audience at several of his shows while telling the audience members how well she satisfies him sexually and makes sure that he not only brings his girlfriend on the set of Larry King Live but for her to interviewed as well so that she can admit that she is his girlfriend if he wanted to keep his life private and discreet?

Criss Angel has spent his entire life being an entertainer. He knows the power of press. He also knows is show is anything but the best on the strip and knows that for everyone talking about his love life it shifts away the negativity his show is getting.

Sorry Richard, but your entire article is based on your interpretation of that statement and making it personal. I did not take it as wannabes meaning to be Criss Angel but rather critics that haven't achieved their own personal success, in whatever field that may be. For example, just a guess, but I bet that writing about Vegas shows and CA is NOT your true dream of ultimate success. Believe is something Criss deems for his own life a big dream come true. How many of us can say the same has happened to us?

Your words " And the truth is that having to tell people when a show turns out as disastrously as "Criss Angel Believe" is one of the harder parts of my job." made me laugh. You take great pleasure in reporting, wait that is not the right word, bashing anything Criss has ever done. Believe just happens to be what is on the table at the moment.

I thought the whole Larry King interview was really great. I still can't figure out the card trick and I especially admired Criss' goal of raising millions this year for kids in need thru his foundation. Criss' explanation of the creation of Believe and what he is trying to accomplish was dead on.

To all those who are sick and tired of reading all about Criss Angel's lovelife and are directly their anger towards the ones reporting the news and the posters who are responding to it may I suggest this.

Send your request directly to Criss Angel and Holly Madison's, PR rep Steve Flynn so that he can either (1) come up with a new strategy or (2) share this with both his celebrity clients in hopes that they may attempt to keep their love more private and less press whore.

What it rather amusing about the Larry King Live show is that throughout the first 30 + minutes you see the following being flagged: COMING UP: CRISS'S SURPRISE and COMING UP: CRISS'S BIG SECRET. Therefore, it does appears Criss Angel was very highly eager to bring his Playboy Bunny on air and flaunt her to all viewers. What is also amusing is that this Playboy Bunny only true claim to fame was sleeping with an 80+ year old man (same as Anna Nicole Smith) and without her doing so she would never have had any of the career opportunities with Playboy and TV. I seriously doubt that she ever had to pound pavement and knock on doors to get a career in Playboy but I'm sure she had more than a handful of cat fights.

Jessie just pointed out what it's all about. There are a lot of entertainers out there that give no one a glimpse of their private life. It is because that is just what it is....private. This is understandable. Basically, it's no ones business. They have their right to privacy. Just like everyone else does. Just the way it is.

BUT....

Jessie also astutely pointed out that with Criss Angel, it's different. He has a new girlfriend who he WANTS, DESIRES and NEEDS to have all these press releases thrown out there in front of everyones' face. He has done this in the past (look at the Tia Tequila debacle when she was in Las Vegas...they spent the night ignoring each other and then BAM! Magically the next day, she's in his lap, hugging him, smiling and acting all lovey dovey...purely staged). I have always noticed (along with others) that not all celebrity couples prefer to have pictures taken of them kissing in public in front of the cameras all the time. I have seen more often than not that those couples that do want to do this for the public are usually doing it for their own gains. And this is what is so transparent of this Criss Angel/Holly Madison thing. ALL of the pictures of them are of them kissing and hugging in public. And it's not one here or one there. It's basically a pure commercial inundation of it!

Okay. I know. All you stupid Loyals are going to point fingers and say that I am jealous and envious of him and his love interest. Not true. Not the case at all. It's just that I see it for what it is and what he is trying to do, not for what is portrayed before the camera. It's a deflection. It's not a thing that just happens and it was caught on camera. It's staged. It's not extemporaneous, like what Criss Angel wants portrayed. That entertainer clearly wants it thrown out there. He WANTS you to see this. He WANTS you to make inferences about it. He WANTS and DESIRES to be in the limelight. Here I am. Look at me. I'm great. You probably should throw more money at me because I did this. It's all crap. Pure crap. And people see this.

A couple of "users"...Criss Angel uses it to flaunt that he is going out with a Playboy centerfold who is many years younger than he is to make sure his inflated ego is fed more, also clearly trying to imply everything is fine with his show (when it's not because the show is incredibly bad) and throw attention away from it, while at the same time trying to suck people into going to it. On the other hand, Holly Madison uses it to flaunt that she latched onto a new "sugar daddy," as if to say she don't have to rely upon Hugh Hefner's Playboy empire anymore, after being booted out of the Playboy Mansion in LA, but no, people, that's not the case because according to her Criss Angel is the love of her life and she just enjoys his money and her continued pampered luxurious lifestyle. It's all transparent to anyone that these two are mutual users, sucking the life out of each other to further their own ends. And it is rather stupid. I know that most people look at this stuff of Holly and Criss in the press and immediately roll their eyes and go, "Oh. There they go again. That stupid Las Vegas pseudo lap of luxury stuff...."

And on top of that, you have reporters who tell people what is going on and then they get replies like you're just "bashing anything Criss has ever done." Not the case at all. Most good journalists just report what is happening.

I guess it's all a matter of interpretation. And most reasonable people can figure it out. Thank God we have Richard here who can look at this thing, immediately recognize it as a pile of crap, smell it to verify that it does indeed emit a foul odor resembling that, inspect it just a bit more closely to determine it's shape, size and texture and look at it to verify that it does have steam rising off of it to instantly recognize it for what it is and spell it to the public that it does INDEED give any and all characteristics of a steaming pile of fecal matter and stay away from it.

If that's called bashing, then I (as well as many other tourists who come to Las Vegas) need Richard to bash some more.

HEY does Debbie = Holly ?!?!

His grammar gaffe says it all: he "could care less about what critics think."

In other words, he DOES care what critics think.

(So, can we have King Tut's tomb back? Anything to start the re-themeing of what is now such a cookie-cutter property.)

Well said, Richard. Sounds like you enjoy being who you are: a journalist. No one becomes a journalist because he/she couldn't be a rock star, magician, Cirque performer, etc. To imply that is laughable.

I think the best thing any critic can do for the public when it comes to Criss Angel is to ignore him completely and let him dissolve back into the puddle of smarm and grease he came from. He's not talented, hot [and this coming from a gay man], or interesting. He's a guy who never got past the age of 15 in his own mind and he obviously proved that on King. Really? That's the explanantion for all these people hating the show? That they're jealous and haters? Who even uses that as an excuse past the 9th grade? I'm 25 and I can't watch more than 2 minutes of his television show because it's so clearly marketed for emo kids. He dresses like a goth teenager, he acts like a sex obsessed frat boy, and he panders to the young crowd so what made anyone think he could pull off a show on the strip? His core audience isn't even old enough to vote... since when do they have the opportunity and money to fly to Vegas and see an expensive show?

I feel like it's an insult to Elton John and Penn and Teller to even be sharing the strip with him. He should be hanging out at the mall and singing with his Motley Crue cover band on the weekends.

I think Criss Angel missed the point here. The critics are professionals. They get paid to critique a musical, show, etc. They KNOW what is good and what isn't. It's a lot like going to the movies.

If you look at Rotten Tomatoes.com, they throw tomatoes at movies they don't like. This way of critiquing the movie can make or break it. It is then up to the public whether they would like to spend their money to see the film.

Case in point, he does not realize that not only do the critics matter, but the blogs reflect the opinions of the tourists, the audiences and the people in general who go to BeLIEve. I, myself, am not a critic in your locale but a writer myself.

I have seen this show. It is not very good. When CA said to Larry King that he was having a "connection" with the audience, it was a lie. He never looks at the audience the whole time he is on stage! He doesn't care what they think. He goes on and at times, does a sloppy job.

Just the other night, he sawed himself in half only after a few complications ensued, the theater went dark, the curtains closed and a voice came over the loud speaker telling people to remain in their seats. I gather his mechanical feet got stuck. And he has done this stunt since September 26 and still does not get it right. Another night, he got his feet caught up in the cables during the straightjacket escape. So he does need a lot of work.

The Larry King interview amazes me that Larry King would even have him on his show. I do not understand the attraction at all that he has with him. Of course, tonight he has wrestling which also leaves me at a loss. LOL~

CA told a lot of lies during the interview. And now he has Holly Madison on the show giggling. It would have been nice if he had just brought himself. He flaunts her like arm candy and she is nothing more than that. He has no morals. Any man would like to take her home, but not say she has "dignity." There is no way in this world that a woman of her stature could have dignity posing for nude magazines and heading the Playboy mansion, I'm sorry, but this little venture CA has thought up, is NOT helping his career.

Try explaining to your 10 year old fan who Holly Madison is. Do they really deserve to know? I think his website should have parental control buttons attached to it.

Unfortunately it seems things are changing by Criss' commands, I was a Loyal and I would love to remain one if Criss stops acting like a spoiled child. This is not the Criss most of loyals fell in love with and this is not the Criss that inspired us all.

This Criss is superficial and is insulting all Loyals by picking a Playboy on call prostitute as his girlfriend and taking her to interview with Larry.
Looks like Larry was part of the game as well , he ruined the fame of his show by broadcasting a pre-recorded interview and pre-rehearsed questions.
It's so Shameful !

I feel bad for his poor pld mother!

I want to ask evey loyal to stop your support and force Criss to return to our beloved magician once again before it's too late for him.

Does anyone remember a few year back when Criss made the comment concerning David Blaine? He said at the time that David is more known for who he dates than for his talent. It's funny how a few short years have gone by and Criss is EXACTLY like what he was putting David down for.

When Criss first came onto the scene in the first season of Mindfreak everyone seemed so taken with him. He genuinely seemed like he cared about his image. He wasn't flaunting JoAnn (HIS WIFE!!) for the planet to see. Many didn't even know that Criss' girl was indeed his wife!!! He kept his private life private and quiet. Many seemed to respect that of him. I know I did.

Now that Criss has achieved fame and fortune, something he so obviously fought for his entire career, he's become a totally different person. He thrives on attention from the media. We see him and Holly going to Disneyland, we see them going to all kinds of events because there is a camera in their faces constantly. It's like they are trying very hard to convince the masses that they are this wonderful happy couple in love. There are celebrities out there that are much more popular than they are and we never see them.

I find the whole thing very sad. Like many other women, I fell in love with the Criss I saw in Season 1 of Mindfreak. I miss that Criss. This current incarnation of Criss is someone I don't particularly like, much less love.

I agree with Sara's observation.

The Larry King Live tapping appears to have been more about showcasing his new hot romance with the well-famous Playboy Bunny and actress rather than taking that opportunity to clear up any negative feedback his show BeLIEve has received.

It appears to me that perhaps all this global gossip talk about their hot romance and their desperate attempt to showcase it at every opportunity is deliberate to clean up his past manwhore reputation he mastered during the past few years. This well-famous Playboy Bunny was known to most of the media being 100% dedicated to her ex-boyfriend and Playboy founder for over seven years. For Criss Angel to demonstrate being in a committed and dedicated relationship will shift the focus away from his once lifestyle, encourage more mass media interest and to encourage them to come down to see his disastrous show located at the Luxor hotel.

I really enjoyed reading this quick article Richard.
I also enjoy reading your list of reasons why you would not want to be Criss Angel but I think you have left one out of your list by oversite.

6. 21 is a fun age but who wants to stay in that mindset forever?

Criss Angel is an immature man inside a 40+ body. Holly Madison may think she made out well when she crossed over to the World of Illusion with her mindfreak boyfrend but I tend to believe she tossed the better man, Hugh Hefner. Hugh Hefner may have been one for variety with the exception of downsizing his list of girlfriends during the past few years but he always treated his selective lady friends very well. Mr. Hefner furnished them a world of money, modeling gigs, TV gigs and appearances, employment at Playboy Inc. and more.
He also has remained friends with almost all of his past relationships. Can Criss Angel claim such a statement? I didn't see one ex come out and support him at his BeLIEve gala.

All Criss Angel could ever off any lady besides the obvious possible STD is the illusion of a great time together. He's too invested in being in love with himsef. Plus there has been numerous witnesses and reports of him being quick to scout and conquer every scantily clad club girl (or skirk) found within the 20 mile radius of th Las Vegas nightclub circuit.

Holly Madison can have that loser magician because no one else cares to have him or wants to know him.

With all this talk, people forget what a phony he is. His Mindfreak magic was video edits and digital compositing, which is NOT magic, just special effects. Also the implosion disaster, where he used a PRE-RECORDED tape to do what was advertised as a "LIVE" domonstration. Then the embarrassment of having FOX13 expose his phony trick minutes after it aired. In order to appreciate Criss Angel, you have to overlook the fake that he is. It's no surprise his show is a bomb, he has'nt the ability to do live magic, so he covers it up with rabbits running around. Where will he go when beLIEve is cancelled? It's only a matter of time, and certainly not 10 years. Hal

I am so shocked. Looks like Criss Angel will be marrying a = bimbo. I didn't see that coming - HAHA.

I just went to a site created by google called google trends. Google.com/trends and searched Criss Angel, David Blaine. It seems Blaine is known for his work and Angel is visible for the girls he has dated...interesting, media blitz

The consistent rumors that have been traveling during the past few years is of Criss Angel behaving like an immature child; temper tantrums whenever things don't go his way.

Congratulations Holly Madison, you finally got the child you always wanted minus 9 months of carriage, pain and beauty marks

The interview with Criss Angel was really terrible. It was very clear that this guy is more interested in being a celebrity than a magician or performer. Bringing on his girlfriend, who was formerly one of Hugh Hefners 4 girlfriends, to avoid talking about his show, which got terrible reviews was very obvious. I think he is a David Blaine rip off, who is not even good in anyway shape or form.

Oh Good God!!! Hal found this blog to bash Criss. It's bad enough he has totally ruined the AE board. Now he can ruin this blog as well.

No one is interested in his magic Hal. Haven't you learned that by now? This blog is for discussing Holly and Criss. You moron.

I could not agree with mobgal more. When I first saw him, in his first season of the show, I thought he was such an amazing, sweet, humble person, and he was so gorgous too. It was nice to see someone with those traits. But now...he's completely different..i don't see how is family even puts up with his crap, considering what great people they are. I bet if is his poor dad were still alive, he'd be just as embaressed at what his son has become.
