Four minutes with Criss Angel

am
Last night I went to Cathouse at Luxor for the premiere party for Criss Angel's new season of "Mindfreak." The degree to which Angel's fame has grown locally in the last year was measurable by the difference between last year's premiere at Luxor and this year's event.
Last year, the premiere was in an accessible area of the Luxor, and though well attended, the event was not a big deal. But last night, I had trouble finding parking at the Luxor self-parking garage early on a Wednesday night. That does not happen. But in addition to the premiere event for the VIP crowd that I was covering at Cathouse, Angel alerted fans through social network sites that he planned to make a personal appearance at the Criss Angel store in Luxor, and his fans were out in force -- or by chance the Luxor happened to have a lot of local teens who dress like Siouxsie Sioux there last night.
Angel also packed the Cathouse VIP premiere party this year with all his friends, admirers and cast members from both his television show "Mindfreak" and his soon-to-open Cirque show, "Believe." As the episode of "Mindfreak" aired, Angel's table had people in the room perching on every inch of space to be near him. If the room was a boat, we would have capsized. It was a real visual of how many people love you when you are on top in Vegas. In the past year, Angel has grown a lot of friends compared to last year's premiere.
And he seemed to be having a blast. After the show, which featured an illusion where he walked on Lake Mead, he gave the crowd an emotional speech (emotional in that Angel's voice cracked and he got a little teary) to tell us all that he was a little "buzzed" but that he really loved us.
I had been promised a short interview with Angel after the event and was a little surprised that he had with him both the director for his Cirque show and the music composer. That would be fine if I could give you now some previously unknown details about "Believe." Of course, none of the three was willing reveal anything yet about Believe.
But Angel's director for Believe, Serge Denoncourt, went on at length to me about how wrong the press was for reporting that Angel and he were not getting along. Denocourt said the constant dishonest press accounts of feuding between them were ridiculous and inaccurate. He told me he and Angel were getting along famously. I was a little baffled because I had not asked any question about how they were getting along. In fact, I have never reported on or read anyone else writing about any issues between Angel and "Believe's" Cirque director. But glad to know, should I ever see those stories, I have a firm denial from Serge Denoncourt.
Anyway, under these conditions, my short interview with Angel had little chance for intimacy, and Angel by his own admission was not entirely sober. The room was also still packed with people gawking at Angel, and his Cirque colleagues were chipping in their thoughts too.
Angel mostly wanted to talk about his escape on live television next week from a building being imploded in Florida. "It is not a trick, it is an escape. What you see is what you get. Next week I put it all on the line. I have to escape in 3 minutes and 30 seconds or the helicopter leaves without me, because the building is coming down. If I am one second late the helicopter leaves without me. This is the biggest and scariest escape of my life." Angel promised his mother this will be his last dangerous escape, and I asked him if he expected he would keep his word. "I believe I will, because you know what? I don't have to do that ... no more, because I have 'Believe' starting on Oct. 10 and this will be my home for 10 years."
We then briefly discussed reports that this stunt was so dangerous that Cirque had bought extra insurance on Angel. Because Cirque had already insured "Believe," that made no sense to me. And Angel admitted that the story came from him not understanding a question he was asked by a reporter. He reminded me that when it comes to insurance there is "Believe," "Mindfreak," and his personal life to deal with and the result in this case was a misunderstanding. So no, Cirque needed no extra insurance for next week's escape.
I asked Angel for his account of the now infamous confrontation he had with local writer Norm Clarke. Angel replied without missing a beat: "I invited Norm tonight. What happened between me and Norm is between me and Norm. I did invite him here. I hope he comes to the opening of 'Believe,' because 'Believe' is going to be the show to see."
And with that Angel and his entourage were whisked away. The entire interview lasted just over four minutes. That seems like such a short interview with Angel until you realize it is still 30 seconds more than he gets next week to finish his business and escape. (Photo by Sarah Gerke)

LMAO, Criss "buzzed". When is Criss Angel not buzzed?
I suspect the huge turnout was a direct result of all the friends and family of the Mindfreak and BELIEVE crew and cast.
Does Criss really believe Norm Clarke was going to stop in and make an appearance?
Will Norm go to the BELIEVE premiere? I doubt it.
Note to Criss Angel: Lay off some of the booze for one day, get your head out of your ass for more than 5 minutes and get back in touch with people who made you where you are currently at.
Words from other famous celebrities; the people you meet going up the later you meet going down the later. You may want to keep friendly with them should you need to get yourself a job in 2 years or so. I hear the unemployment lines are brutual right now in Vegas.

So where's the REAL story Richard? I'm talking about Angel's obvious 'roid usage. We all know that Vegas is home to a large contingent of pro bodybuilders now and have seen the results of Carrot Top's use of the juice. We also saw all the indictments of top rappers like Timbaland being named on 'roid supplier's client lists by the DEA. How about doing some digging and finding out what Angel is using?

I just want to give CONGRATS to Criss on his amazing success after all the hard work he put into getting to where he is today. He's an encouragement to us all that if you put your all into your dreams and goals they can become attainable.Sacrifice, risks and belief in yourself are required as well.He get's these valuable lessons across to all his fans LOUD AND CLEAR.If I could've been there to celebrate his success with him I would have. The show was great last night and I'm going to work hard at being able to see the cirque show,I would have drank too if I was there,it's part of celebrating baby!

I enjoyed the article, Richard. I'm sorry because I may take a chance and sound like a broken record here, but I have to add something. Now since it's brought to the forefront again.
I’m still convinced Criss Angel is a weasel after reading your article. Because he still hasn’t addressed the issue about threatening a respected Las Vegas Review Journal reporter at all. Based on the following:
(1) He states he invited Norm to that party. And he stated it not only once, but twice. Huh? Why does he do that? He thinks you are not going to believe him? I’m confused. I don’t know what to make of that. Is he saying that to make you believe it’s true or is he saying that to convince himself that it’s true?
(2) The answer he gave you did not answer the question. The answer was more of a plug for his new show, along with the fact of his complete deflection of the issue of owning up to it, apologizing for it, although it seems like in some minuscule way he did acknowledge it happened and he was on the same planet and the same city where it happened. Other than that, there’s nothing there. The part I don’t like is that his answer kind of hints to people that he is friends with Norm. Huh? Don’t make sense. He threatens this reporter and then all of a sudden everything is hunky dory and he’s now a friend? I wonder what Norm has to say about that.
(3) And lastly, this is the most glaring thing: Criss Angel did not come forward about it. He comes up with some kind of reasoning ONLY because he was asked. And the reasoning doesn’t answer the question at all. He left it open ended, hoping that people read into it that it was an apology when all it is is a feeble effort to make it go away and hope that resolves the issue once and for all.
Just my observations. Maybe I got it wrong, because I wasn’t there. But I think I’m right. Criss Angel is still a weasel, a coward and a manipulator. He STILL won’t come forward to own up to what he did. And now it seems like his main focus is to deflect the question and turn it into a way to sell his stupid show.
Incredible. And knuckleheads like this make millions of dollars. Don’t make sense. But I shouldn’t be that shocked about it though...this stuff can only happen in Vegas....

He was not sober by his own admission??? So what else is new?
Posted by: yen woo ping | July 24, 2008 at 08:45 PM
Dear Slaves to manipulative media,
these comments are quite comical, Norm Clark is getting his 15 minutes of fame and all of a sudden he is a respected writer, would he still be respected if one knew he was sleeping with with one of the beauty pageant contestants? (not claiming that he did)
CA not coming forward with this is him protecting Clark and you know the coward is not Angel it is this sad guy whis playing the handicapped card, pushing Angel against the wall while he was the pig himself. He should of punched him for cheating, he didn't and that's all that matters. Have you people never threatened anyone in affectious behavior?
Raise your hand if you knowingly heard the name Norm Clark before this? Now everyone seems to be his best friend. Be careful who you support and read his articles, he is not the sacrificial lamb.

Criss Angel DOES NOT use steroids. The man works out, he's not pumped up like the pro wrestlers nor Carrot Top.
Criss does overindulge with the booze. That's a well-known fact. I'm waiting to hear when he enters Rehab before Cirque ends their contract.
Are any of his shows sold out yet? I thought he was a HUGE star? What's the problem?
I thought David Copperfield has something to worry about with Criss entering the local scene with his show?

I want to take a moment and congratulate Criss Angel as well for the upcoming BELIEVE show.
Great news, I hear the seats are starting to sell. I believe there up to 25 seats sold for the few show. WOW, all the teenage boppers will be there dressed in goth.
Make sure you young ladies dress well. I hear Criss Angel chases skirts of ladies from 18-21.

The beginning of the show where he was "run over" by his new Caddy SUV made me raise my eyebrows - not because of the "illusion" which was great as always - but because of that Spanish?? dude (obviously new on his crew) who kept hugging & running up to him - it was disturbing to watch, at best.....
The walk on water "illusion" itself was a tad boring.
And if this guy is "supposedly" getting his body in shape to handle the 'beLIEve' run - why is he even DRINKING AT ALL??? Rumor is he is starting his OWN CLUB (where all his psychotic Loyals can hang out) and WHERE HE CAN DRINK all he wants after his performances - anyone else read DANGER signs here???
I hope his new bulk is NOT from 'roids' - but from straight working out - maybe the 'roid' usage explains his EXTREMELY LOW CLASS behavior lately ???
Glad the BLONDE HAIR is gone - it made him look too 'girly'.
Note the WEDDING RING tat is the ONLY ring he has on........hmmmmmm - which is unusual in itself - since I was ALMOST BLINDED by all the jewelry he wore in the Season Opener...THE BLING IS GORGEOUS THOUGH, I'll give him that - unfortunately IT DRAWS ALL THE WRONG WOMEN TO YOU DUDE !!!

Colin, Criss DID address the issue. He said it was between him and Norm and that he had invited Norm to the party. People have verbal disputes all the time and make up later, and sometime they don't. However, does it all have to be done in the pubic eye? Move on and find another hobby.
Posted by: Debbie | July 25, 2008 at 01:22 PM
Criss works his ass off. Steroid free. As for alcohol....he doesn't drink a fraction of the booze you think he does. I know this because I've been Criss's friend for more than 20 years. I'm currently his TV magic Producer. This season was specifically built around getting to know Criss more. the real guy and not the media created guy. Criss loves magic and loves his fans more. That's what stars are made of.
Congrats to him for keeping it together.

I have NO idea if Criss is using ;roids or not. Although he seems to have REALLY bulked up in a VERY short period of time. I do know that there are a lot of suppiments and such that will allow you to bulk up, the problem is, is that they make you larger very quickly without the real conditioning to properly support the added muscle mass. Criss actually admitted that, that is how he achieved the KILLER bod he had is season 1. He also said that he stopped taking them because he gained muscle and weight (was at one time 164 lbs.) but was not ACTUALLY physically strong and this caused him to blow out his shoulder. As for the tat? He originally got an identical one with Veronica Grabowski, (Miss. Las Vegas). I SERIOUSLY doubt that the tat he has now means much OTHER than that it no longer resembles the one he got with her. Hasn't anyone noticed that he's REALLY toned down the amount of bling he wears wherever he is? Oh! And the "ring" tat was not the only bling he had on. Look again. He's wearing at least one ring one the hand holding the mic. I think it is his Luxor ring. Maybe he just got tired of looking like a walking jewelry store? He says he works out 2 hrs. EVERY day and is getting about 3 hours sleep. CRISS! Your going to kill yourself doing that AND fulfilling your obligation to the casino to go to the clubs and drink. Your increasing the risk to you health when you do all you have been AND over induldge! PLEASE! STOP! Get some REAL rest and lay off the booze. There are too many people, your family and the ones you call "loyals", who would be devistated if you REALLY hurt yourself, OR worse! Gl this year, I hope it's all you had hoped it would be when you were still trying to get to where you are now. Just remember, you need to be HEALTHY and RESTED to be able to enjoy it all!

Norm Clarke will admit it himself. He's not known on a national scale like this idiot Criss Angel is. And he is proud of that. He's just a normal guy who is a reporter, and has been a reporter for about ten years now, for a large circulation paper in Las Vegas, just earning a paycheck the best he can. He don't have to posture, portray a public image other than what he is and surround himself with unquestioning followers. Norm is just a reporter that reports things as best as he can and lets his work speak for itself.
I admire him. WAY more than this Criss Angel joker who is supposed to be a well known celebrity who, in a fit of rage, threatened to blind him. CA shows no self control at all. He also shows no remorse for what he did. The gall of this clown to try to turn it around and blame it on something else or on Norm. He should be ashamed of himself for insinuating that.
In the battle of credibility, Norm wins hands down. On the one hand, you have a performer that dazzles people with slight of hand and is brought to many households through the medium of television. On the other hand, you have a reporter in a dynamic city that reports the news. He didn't ask to be threatened. It just happened to him and he reported it. Now you can see why Norm wins hands down in believability. Norm has nothing to gain from it. And he still doesn't. To explain it away that Norm is not known is incredibly stupid. That is not an excuse. A threat is a threat.
The reason I won't let it go (and other people won't neither) is that CA shows TOTAL arrogance towards the matter. He clearly exhibits he's stubborn by not admitting he made a mistake or owning up to it. CA has no explanation for it, and here it is way past three months after it happened. It was brought out in the press and it is still there, hanging there, unanswered. He offers no acknowledgement of it. This "it's between Norm and me" excuse is a way to deflect it and not answer it at all. That is not an answer. And this clown has the temerity to try to answer it by encouraging people to see his show! Like it's an opportunity to plug something.
Please don't get me wrong, Richard...I enjoy your articles and your affording a chance to comment as a drop of reason in a lake of irrationality, but on an aside, I've been reading Norm's recent articles. The ones since this party at the Luxor that CA had on July 23. Norm makes no mention of it. I think it's kind of funny because I'm very sure that Norm wasn't invited, even though CA contends that he was invited. Good on you, Norm. Your silence sends a clear message that Criss Angel is nothing.
In the meantime, CA will continue to attempt to pull the wool over everyone's eyes by avoidance and re-direction of the issue. And the Cirque de Soleil people will continue to blindly follow what CA wants to do. I predict this will all catch up to them all in the end. A lot of people see what's going on. Not only here in Las Vegas, but all over.
And by the way, Vegan Gal? That quote was from a Allen Touissant, a New Orleans blues/jazz musician in a blues song he made called "On Your Way Down." "Sun rise...and sun set..since it began...it hasn't changed yet...people fly higher...begin to lose sight...can't see very clearly...when they're in flight...ain't it high time...that you found..same people you misuse...on your way up....you might meet up with....on your way down." Very appropriate in this instance. Thanks for the analogy.

Norm's silence speaks volumes and not in the way you think. Criss is no idiot. General statements about "alot of people see what's going on", is true. The people see a great artist, someone who touches their hearts. Criss has developed another animal. Combining so many different elements. It reaches ALOT of people. Need proof....check out Clearwater next week.

I wish I could have been there! Actually, I wish I would live in Las Vegas since I know about Criss Angel... Congrats Criss, to your upcoming show BELIEVE and to the premiere of season 4 of MINDFREAK! The walk on the lake was one of the best things I've ever seen in my life, so beautiful and inspiring and absolutely mind-blowing!
I'm very happy that the live episode next week will be available on the internet as well, so people all over the world will have the chance to watch it. And to be honest, I'm glad that he made the decision to let this one be his last dangerous, perilous demonstration. One part of me still loves to watch the dangerous stuff, but a bigger part of me cares too much about him to really enjoy the thrill. I hope I won't get a heart attach during those 3 1/2 minutes! ;-)
And for the "Norm-Clark-Story", I smiled when I read that he said exactly what I and many other people thought from the beginning (while certain others still can't stop to bring it up and even after this article ask for a public statement): that it's a private thing between the two and doesn't concern anybody else!
I just hope that Criss doesn't overreach himself with all the work, public appearances, still getting only 3 hours of sleep every night and the way he spends the less free time he has in the clubs. I hope that he really knows himself good enough to know all that won't harm him. It's his life and I would never presume to criticize his way of life and his decisions for himself- it's just that I love him and can't help being worried about all the pictures where he looks so tired, overworked and sometimes even sad. But I believe in him. He will go through this and overcome everything, like he always did. And we, the Loyals and everybody else who loves him, will always be there. Rock on, Criss, you're the best!!!

Joe, the premier of MF4 was fabulous. I absolutely loved it and was on the edge of my seat for that one hour. Criss, the consultants and Crew all did a wonderful job. Can't wait for the live show this Wednesday.

I agree Jeanne. The walk on the lake was breath taking. Truly magical. I particularly liked at the end w/ the helicopter making the wave on the lake w/ Criss standing there. Gave me goosebumps.
I see what you mean Joe. This first epi he seemed to talk more about the real Criss. I know the demands on Criss are great. He is such a strong soul and I wish him nothing but the best. Stay strong Angel......there are alot of people pulling for you.

Regarding the excuse that it's a matter between Norm and CA isn't acceptable. Because it was reported out to the public as a news item. And this news item is still left out there. It's hanging in the air. It's unresolved with the public. The public has a right to know. Richard asked this question. And I'm commenting on it. That I am not blinded. I see what's going on.
It's unacceptable mainly because here is a big time celebrity who threatens a news reporter over a woman, which happened during the Miss America Pagent, a large public event, and there has been no word from him about his threat, no apology, no retraction, no nothing. He exhibits unrepetance, arrogance, acting like it's a normal thing to just threaten someone and then just let it be swept under the rug and forgotten. No. There's no resolution at all about the matter. It's still hanging.
The unquestioning followers of CA are satisfied with this "it's between Norm and me" excuse, but the general public isn't. And besides that, Criss Angel's excuse that it's between Norm and me is just another example of arrogance to just throw this to the side, make it disappear, make it forgotten. Criss Angel and his people as well as his unquestioning followers just want it to go away and are content with CA controlling the spin on it. Well, I'm saying he cannot control the truth. It's out there. It's hanging there. And he shows no remorse for what he said to this reporter. This is public information. Inquiring people want to know.
These unquestioning followers of CA are going to ridiculous efforts lately. They say pay attention to CA's "excuse." They are dazzled, stars in their eyes, only judging him on his stage personality and disregarding his off stage reprehensible behavior. They point fingers at Norm. They point fingers that it didn't happen. They point fingers all over the place. Now, the latest finger is pointed at me...asking why I keep bringing it to the forefront. This is an excuse? This is sad, unquestioning blind followers of CA. You are really reaching for an excuse now. You are demonstrating to everyone that you are desperately grasping for things that will explain it away and unwittingly furthering CA's silence in this matter.
Who am I? I'm just a concerned citizen who lives in Las Vegas that sees something is wrong and does not like it. And I'm addressing it. And I'll keep addressing it so long as it's still a news worthy item til something happens. I have no ulterior motives other than to find out the truth about this matter. So far, as of at this moment, nothing has happened as far as the truth coming out. It's Criss Angel's move. And he hasn't done it. And it looks like he doesn't want to do the right thing and talk about it. This brands him a coward. Someone who don't own up to his mistakes and take responsibility for his actions. Just this fact makes it still newsworthy.
And am I jealous because of his fame? Shame on you, unquestioning blind followers of Criss Angel. That is the most stupid thing I've ever heard in the comments here. You are really reaching now. I have no aspirations for fame, nor am I jealous. He could be the ruler of the free world and I could care less about that. Everyone is held accountable for their actions. This includes entertainers. I'm just someone that is not blinded by stars, fame and stage personae, is wondering what really happened, a person who saw something that is totally wrong and is inquiring as to why that is and how come nothing has been done to seek closure to this. I'm not blinded by stars and stage personae. Just a someone out there amongst a bunch of Loyals all screaming, yelling and trying to drown my voice of reason out.

Criss states that this will be his last dangerous stunt. So what will he do in Season 5?
If he doesn't do anything "dangerous" and "death defying" will anyone want to watch?
Maybe there ISN'T going to be a Season 5.
To be honest, I think that would be a good thing for Criss. He can focus on his live show and maybe TV specials. Not to mention he wouldn't be ridiculed anymore for using edits and camera tricks. Sure would take a lot of stress off of him.

I'm not sure if Criss Angel is going to be able to pull over a 10 year stunt with Cirque but I will say that I have lost all due respect of him regardless if he does becomes more successful than his TV show did.
I was a fan back in the day when he was a local here in NYC. I even was one of the lucky few who did manage to witness his off Broadway show. It was incredibly dark but incredibly mesmerizing. I knew then that Criss Angel had a gift and he was going to go far. I was also honored to be part of his past, his developmental years. Proud during the time Mindfreak TV show become a hit. Our New Yorkan boy became a household name.
Seems like now that his career has taken new shifts and lengths so has his friendship with his longtime friends and business associates. Due to management he cut ties with the majority of them.
He cut ties with majority and from what I hear he is so egotistical that the only appropriate word to call him is a narcissist.
Now all I hear from some of you local Vegans that he better known as a manslut than a magician. Criss makes a sleight of hand with all the local club goers who are willing to spend 15 minutes alone with him. Perhaps its due to Criss massive ego of himself, a narcissist at best to feel empowered and highly impressionable amongst these young ladies. Who knows, who cares but I have completely lost interest in Criss Angel.
Criss Angel claims to works so hard at his craft that he manages only to spends 3 hours a night of sleep. I don't believe it. I tend to believe he spends more time trying to chase young skirt to keep his massive ego afloat and his career is merely a device for this. Here in NY, I hear his soon-to-be ex has more dirt on Criss that will assure her a comfortable lifestyle to serve 10 lifetimes. For a man who is so well gifted at illusion, you would think he would have had a better grip of covering up his fidelities.
I have completely lost respect for Criss Angel. For such a professional he has become nothing more than a manslut fool in layers of Afflication and diamonds. So much greed. You Vegans can keep Criss Angel. He fits right into that lifestyle. I guarantee if and when I take a trip to Vegas from my state of New York it won't be to see a that egostical fool. I will see quality entertainment, AKA an entertainer who carries class and dignity as well as appreciation for themselves and the people that support their career.

Set aside all this drama about the Norm Clarke incident and the upcoming BELIEVE show. When is Criss going to finally come out of the closet. We all know that all this so-called women friends are nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Enough already, come out. We all know you are gay. Don't be scared. We're not going to leave you.

I dont believe for a second that CA is a roid user. His dad was a body builder and Criss works-out 2 hours a day.His brothers are also in shape as well. They are all very proud of their dad and I've seen pics of his dad,he looks like Mr.Universe! Also, just because Criss spends time at Lax does not mean he's a drunk, for all anyone knows he could be only having one drink most of the time.I think Criss is a social person and that also he probably is there PR sometimes as well and he's also living there.Just because Criss takes pic's with woman does not mean he's dating them all or sleeping with them all either.Obviously he dates,so what?that's what single men do and so do single women. Some of you are so judgemental and also are always believing the worst of every action you hear about, most of wihch are conjured up by people like yourselves. That's my thoughts and I'm not going to argue about it either,You think what you want

I agree Bettylouh, completely. What people fail to realize is what his art, not his personal life, has brought to sooo many people in a positive way. Don't be afraid to dream, to work hard and realize anything is possible. I can't see how this is a bad statement for our youth to hear. In fact, many adults need to hear it to.

I loved the season opener of Mindfreak!! Lots of nice changes.
Hey, Joe Monti.....good to 'see' you here. We met at the coffee shop close to the theater(at the Luxor). Remember? I showed you pictures of my Mindfreak bar in my house. And we talked about Jeff McBride. Hope you are doing ok...and give my best to Criss and the crew(and say Hi to Costa for me!). Ya'll have done a FINE job on the new season so far, and have confidence the rest of the season will be just as great.
Take care.
