The secret side of the adult industry

One thing about the AEE/AVN adult industry convention and awards show is how very open and press friendly the entire experience. Everyone wants a picture taken and everyone wants to talk. This is how Dave Navarro (who I saw wandering about AVN looking as dolled up as any actress) put it on his blog:
I have been to a lot of award shows in my days but none have ever been as fun and loose as the AVNs. They feel a lot more like a celebration of the industry than a competition. Perhaps the fact that I am not in the porn industry has a lot to do with how it came off in my eyes. It also felt like there wasn't anyone looking for a poorly dressed entertainer or press looking for a screw up to blow out of proportion. It's rad that the industry is so raw and in your face that there really isn't any way to find "scandal".
This apparently is not a universal vibe in the adult business. Right now an Internet porn convention, Internext Expo, is taking place at Mandalay Bay. Las Vegas Sun reports that both national and local media have been denied access to the convention that has 5,000 attendees. Looking at the website for the convention it seems the side of the adult industry that the media are not welcome to view includes things like seminars on search engine secrets. The unseemly side of adult these days is not what it used to be.

Only in America could a "C" list musician with too much time on his hands be quoted as an "expert" on anything...Jeeze...

I've been to InterNext, and it's the *really* fun show. Instead of a bunch of posing for the raincoat crowd (like the AVN show), it's people in the industry goofing off and having fun. The gay and straight sides of the business mix, you get invited to the most outrageous parties and hotel suite soirees, and you meet some really cool down to earth people. The AVN awards used to be fun, about 10 or 12 years ago, now the awards show itself has gotten too big and bloated, though the afterparty is worth checking out.

Hi you could go to a lot of the Intenext Events. Actually the seminars you are talking about - you coudl have just walked in - they where not checking the badges for these ( Iknow cause I was there). Sane with some of teh parties
Intenext is hardly a secret show. I think its just that they are really strict with the press they are letting in. Its actually normal for these kind of business shows. has nothing to so with adult.

Being in the adult industry I'll explain why we don't allow outsiders into certain things... the seminars we have limited space, and the press doesn't NEED to be taking up seats in a seminar where we're discussing things like Digital Rights Management technology and search engine optimiaztion. Those seminars are for the people who paid to be there.
We generally don't like it when the press shows us at our parites, either. We're there to network, to have some fun and to make new friends, not to be a freak show for the evening news. We're quite proud of what we do, there's very little going on that your mother couldn't see, but we don't like it when people crowd around and ask us to mug for the camera.
We're not Britney and Lindasay, you know.

I've just finished writing a book on blacks in the adult industry called Money Shot (Thunder's Mouth Press, Sept. '07) and one of the complaints by African American performers is that they were locked out of events and made to feel like second class citizens. Something to look into.

The only thing "expert" about Dave Navarro's entrance into his own blog was his view as an outsider to the porn industry's annual conference. Granted he is Dave Navarro so he probably gets doors and attitudes opened up due to who he is (which is definitely NOT a "C" list). Dave you ROCK; it's unfortunate that you have to get pigeon holed by a non-fan who probably has as much musical talent as they do reading comprehension skills and BTW has wayyy too much time on his hands since he is reading about your view of the AVN awards meeting in Vegas. It has the distinct odor of someone who has never been and never will go but thinks they know what it's all about. There is a name for that, actually 2 - Jealous and Bitter. Try getting your website done then you too will have time on your hands. BTW America is a great place where people like Dave can make it as a musician, producer, and be with gorgeous women like Carmen Electra and still have a down to earth attitude. Dave is a super bro, cool cat who treated people well as host of Rockstar(s). In fact you would think he might be more affected due to all his success that this great country has afforded him but if you don't like it here you are welcome to split Mr. Harrigan!
