Smoking Ban in Las Vegas

11:25 AM PT, Dec 21 2006
This morning a Judge allowed the smoking ban passed by Nevada voters in a ballot initiative as Question 5 to take effect. However, the judge also issued a preliminary injunction against criminal penalties for violation; according to Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston the judge cited  "To Kill A Mockingbird" as well as his 9 year-old child's thoughts on the subject in his ruling. So, it looks like Las Vegas will be taking a baby step toward becoming a non-smoking city. Things won't be changing too much for tourists on this one; casinos have an exemption.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Smoking Ban in Las Vegas:

it seems too many socialist liberal Californians have moved in taken over the Great State of Nevada. I'm one of many that won't be spending their vacation dollars in Nevada. I recently cancelled my family's yearly week long vacation there. If I want to be treated like a 2nd class citizen I might as well stay in the socialist state of NY and oh BTW, the smoking ban here hasn't worked either. Businesses have closed people layed off and of course, less tax revenue for the state DAHHHH! dummies.
Nevada use to be fun. Farewell the one time Fun Place to be!!

I stay away from Vegas because of the smoke. The stench is unbearable. Smokers are losers. Or at least they are perceived to be losers. They are stupid having started smoking and weak because they can't quit.

I'm an ex-smoker but I always smoke when I go to Vegas. It's Sin City for crying out loud. For me it's part of just letting loose and having fun--doing things I don't normally do (which includes drinking). I've already booked our latest trip, but this could definately affect trips after this. Vegas is about having fun, it's an image they have embraced. If the casinos themselves ever went smoke free that would be it for me, no reason to go. I could gamble on the reservation in Arizona, the freedom of Vegas is the appeal for me.

Hello

Hurray, I'm so glad about this latest smoking ban.
It compares with Hawaii, lovely news!
Since the ban has been put into effect on Hawaii it means that I can vacation there without having to pre-book a room.
Now I just turn up and take my pick of any of the hundreds and hundreds of empty, lovely, sweet smelling non-smoking rooms I choose. In the past Hawaii used to be crammed full to bursting point with hoards of nasty, smelly tourists, but not any more.
Thing have changed for the better, the majority of tourists who used to visit Hawaii have changed destinations and are going to places like the Bahamas, where they can smoke as much as they like.
This island nation is obviously a very backward one, can you imagine this?
Who in their right mind wants to pay to stay in a place where they are allowed to do whatever they feel like doing?
I say good riddance, glad to be rid of them, after all, we don't need them spending their dollars here if they are going to smoke those nasty cigarettes...... do we?

Another thing that makes me really mad is the fact that some people are actually trying to promote hotels who give their guests a choice between smoking and non-smoking rooms, this is a website where hotel owners can actually advertize to attract some of the 46 million people in the US who smoke cigarettes, see http://www.smokingwelcome.com
I think this is wrong and should be stopped, the government should ban any form of choice and freedom whatsoever, and effect total control over what used to be known as "personal freedoms".

Roy (the blatant advertizer....... tongue placed firmly in-cheek)

I'm an ex-smoker who kept smoking for years, just to piss off the anti-smoking Nazis. And who smells worse--smokers or left-wing activists? Lemme tell ya.

Oh my god.....I just stare and stare and can't believe what I am seeing. I am a Romanian coming to visit Las Vegas this summer and I am a smoker. Yeah , yeah I can already see : "We don't need your money here , filthy-smoking-Romanian , commie , uneducated , barbarian " or any other nicely put appellation forms, but what are you saying? Do you even think before you write ? You are talking about smokers like they would be some kind of low-lives , murderers , the plague of society and that you will protect you families from this horrible threat that will most certain bring you and your family death. I mean we are normal human beings just like you , that think , eat , sleep , drink , you know.....the usual stuff. Yet you treat us like animals. I am certain that it is not healthy and I do not encourage people to do it , but at least let me decide for myself how I want to treat my body. You Americans have this impression of smokers , but how about the over-50% obesity rate in children. Sure ,"Here kid , for not smoking cigarettes you will get an extra-large , sooper-dooper , ultra-king McDonald's menu. Each day for the rest of your life! That way you'll stay healthy and strong!" You practically forwarded smoking to all modern world. Who were the first to chew tobacco? Who had the most impressive advertisements (see Marlboro)? I think you should maybe thing again of your national priorities in health before. And I am not saying that smoking should be permitted everyehere , but then again.....Isn't USA the land of freedom? Of course it isn't , what am I thinking......People , after being well informed about the dangers of smoking should be allowed to choose for themselves. That is , in fact , freedom. But , hey, you should know better about that.

P.S.: Thanks for extirpating the communist dictation. For that , I am truly grateful.
