How to Be a Vegas VIP

July 13, 2006 | 12:25 pm
Robin Leach has been on vacation and this past week and has been turning his blog over to various Vegas celebrities, headliners and insiders to write.

One of the recent offerings that caught my attention was by Jack Colton. Colton had some really interesting tips for going to clubs. For example, "If the majority of your party is filled with sexy women, make sure to respectfully let your host know that when you are making your reservations. It will make their job easier, and might save you a few hundred-dollar bottles of liquor off of your table bottle minimum."

Really? He also offers insider insight on a topic of utter fascination to me: celebrity appearance fees. According to Colton the fees are even higher than I imagined: "Stars like Ashlee Simpson, Denise Richards and Carmen Electra will often rake in six figure paychecks just to show up and have their picture taken partying inside Las Vegas mega clubs." I had thought that the numbers were closer to the $50,000 to $75,000 range.

Anyway, Colton definitely knows the Vegas club scene though his ultimate point will be familiar to all: The amount of VIP treatment you get at a Vegas nightclub is in direct proportion to how much money you are willing to spend. Colton's most useful advice tells you where to throw your money for the best results. He recommends limos over cabs, slipping money to doormen ($10 to $20 per person in your party) and reserving bottle service.

Colton offers a couple strong hints that hiring a VIP host to work it all out gives you a big step up. As Colton defines the job: "A VIP host is a middleman that doesn’t actually work for the club, but has an established relationship with the hosts and doormen at most of the clubs around town. Their job, if you choose to use them, is to do all of the work for you, and to ensure that you and your friends have a great time all night. You don’t have to worry about waiting in lines, getting anyone’s attention, making reservations, scheduling limousines, or keeping all of your friends under control time wise. They will take care of everything in advance, walk you through the lines with little-to-no-wait, and will also be expecting an additional tip for their services (of $100 or more)."

Because I was unfamiliar with Colton, I e-mailed Robin Leach — in what ever rich person paradise he is currently having one of the more fulfilling lives of any human I know — to inquire about Colton's background. Leach replied: "A VIP host at Tao and Pure."

I've seen a group of three guys try and spot the doorman at Tao 100 each and promptly got rejected. Maybe, just maybe if their male to female ratio in their group is favoring females or you're trying to cut close to closing.

Hey just was keeping my ear to "the media ground" and ran across your post. Very glad you found the article interesting! Las Vegas is definitely a city with an interesting nightlife scene. Let me know if you ever need any information, etc.

Thanks,

Jack Colton

PS: While Tao and Pure are both excellent clubs, I've never actually worked as a host/vip host for them. I was the marketing director for Seven Nightclub years ago, and have been an independent consultant in the time since.

Jack Colton? Come on now. This kid is really a nobody in the Vegas scene. Ask anybody at the major clubs there and they will surely reply with a "Huh? Who?" response. And Robin Leach, you're gonna take advice from a guy who's been out of the scene for nearly 80 years. I mean, yeah, Robin goes out and shows up to most of the parties with paid hookers but 98% of the people at the clubs don't know who gramps is nor do they care and 99.98% surely have never heard of this Jack Colton. I jet to Vegas quite frequently and know all the major players there and just out of curiosity I called a couple of them to ask about Mr. Colton and got the same "Huh?Who?" response I'm sure you will get too. Is he kidding anybody with those pictures? A girls best friend indeed.

Ive never heard of Seth Loew, or The 13 Club either...until right now, reading this... I think youre missing the whole point of jackcolton.com. Go to the website, and take a look around, figure out what its about, you might learn something.

Dear Mr. Lowe, Who cares how old Robin Leach is? I think it is sad that you would choose to be that silly. No one who deals with Robin Leach, especially people like me who compete against him for stories every day, feel that being younger gives us any advantage. Robin Leach is totally relevant to the Las Vegas of today. And, you are right, it is not because of a television show he once did. A lot of the young club insiders who he knows would be surprised to learn "gramps" did that back in the day. Instead, they know Robin Leach because he is the workaholic always on the scene and always meeting with their bosses. I suggest you read the recent article in Forbes on Leach to learn how a little celebrity and a LOT of hard work have made Leach a serious player in Vegas today. Yrs., Richard

I think Jack Colton's website is awesome. I'd rather take advice from someone who frequents the clubs than someone who works for them! As a Vegas local, I know that all the tips he gives will work. They're all very good things for visitors to keep in mind, especially if their group has a bunch of dudes! AND I can most certainly tell you this....Jack Colton is definitely not a "nobody" in the Vegas scene!!!

Hey Seth Lowe (from the comments)! On behalf of 99% of the people in Las Vegas nitelife, you're a total moron. Do your research before mouthing off.

yeah, this jack colton kid doesn't know what he is talking about. going to the clubs and living the club-life every night won't give you insider knowledge about the clubs! no way! you should watch television and claim to know all the "major players" in vegas (like ed deline) because you are always "jetting" there!
