If you are a local, Las Vegas is notorious for having terrible radio. We do have a 24 hour jazz station which is great but it is literally at the expense of having a college radio station programmed by students like most cities our size. Anyway, recently a station called Area 108 has begun including amongst metal and hard edged hits a few songs by more alternative artists. Of course, alternative is very relative thing in Las Vegas; east coast artists like Lou Reed still can't draw a crowd here and folks like Patti Smith don't even try. The power of the Strip to drive up guarantees  also makes it hard for all ages venues to exist outside the Strip. In short it can suck to be a kid in Las Vegas looking to see the bands you've downloaded. So, it was gratifying to see so many teenagers at a sold out concert sponsored by Area 108 with the Strokes last night at the Joint at the Hard Rock for a rare show that seemed to pull in far more locals than tourists.
