Nevada Feuds with LA Television Station

08:06 AM PT, Mar 24 2006

Oscargoodman_fd1dqkgy One of the most successful organizations in Las Vegas is the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. They are the ones responsible for the "What Happens Here...." advertising campaign as well as generally credited with helping grow our brisk convention business.  Of course, this public/private organization with a roster of well juiced locals on the payroll generates its share of controversy. But for now LVCVA is perceived as a real winner for the community and so there has been no need for the sort of finger pointing and blame that would push awkward questions about LVCVA's very unique existence onto any agenda.

Less well known is the Nevada Development Authority. The group is using $5.1 million in taxpayer dollars to convince businesses in California to move here. The campaign includes a series of television ads which ABC affiliate KABC refused to run. The media director for the advertising agency told "The Review-Journal" that "KABC wouldn't run it because it was too anti-California and they found it offensive." The commercials feature peanuts and Mayor Oscar Goodman repeatedly punning around with the idea you would be nuts to stay there instead of moving your business here. The same thing happened to the LVCVA when the NFL caused a stir by refusing to accept Vegas advertising in the Super Bowl and it was a blessing in disguise. The result the mayor reminds us in the Review-Journal: "It got worldwide attention."
I don't know if the world will care about this one. But at least the Movable Buffet does. Apparently, every other form of media in LA has accepted the dreaded peanut/Mayor Goodman advertising. So, please keep an eye and ear out for; let us know if you are offended.

Here in Nevada we are proud of our tax status compared to California. We have no state income tax, no corporate tax and no inheritance tax. Casino revenues subsidize some pretty good restaurants at the casinos and various video poker places. Life is good.
