Stardust to Become Dust

January 4, 2006 |  7:28 am

One of the last landmarks of old Vegas, The Stardust, is coming down. In a press release, Boyd Gaming, the current owners, announce plans to tear down the Stardust to build Echelon Place. A planned cost of $4 billion, Echelon Place will cover 63 acres mixing a casino, convention facilities, restaurants, nightclubs and shopping. In addition to regular rooms the new resort will contain a boutique Shangri-LA hotel within it. The new resort is expected to open in 2010. Meanwhile, during the early stages of getting permits and plans in place, The Stardust is expected to remain open throughout 2006 with demolition planned for 2007. For those of you who have seen the movie Casino, the Stardust is the casino whose history parallels that Hollywood tale. Is there anyplace left for Steve & Eydie to play?

I just heard it will take place on March 12th at 2:30 am. They don't plan anything spectular, but Boyd might have fireworks to begin Echelon Place.

I operate an implosion website and the digging I have done confirms Ann's comments, they are keeping it quiet until AFTER the blast. Assuming a valid date becomes known, any suggestions on a hotel that would have a good view? Looks like Frontier, Circus Circus and Wynn may be options.

Implosion date is March 12th my boyfriend is doing the fireworks show for the end of the Stardust!

March 13 and 14, One night will be the main tower and the other will be a smaller 9 story building.

I was informed the demolition was going to take place Friday night on the 23rd of Feb @ 2:00 am! I'm not sure but a construction worker informed me of this news, I live here in Vegas so I plan to be crusing the scene to see if it's true.

I work for the company doing the implosion - it is March 13th @ 2:30 am. We are having a large event for this the 11 - 13th.

The demolition of the Stardust is being documented on my website http://www.leavinglv.net. Check it out.

Hello.
Is there any up to date information regarding the date & time?
Please e mail me. Im hearing conflicting reports of Tuesday the 13th and Saturday the tenth.
I have a loooong ways to drive to get there(Seattle).
Thank you very much.

Does anybody know where I might be able to get some Memorabelia for this great Hotel & Casino

Newest info as of 3-6-07, I'm a local, Monday March 12th, likely around 2-4 AM.

Still, I'd bet there are fireworks. It's not like the town is asleep at that time of day. I guarantee I'll be there, camcorder in hand.

we were in lasvegas march 2-6 2007. they said the STARDUST is to come down on monday march 12.fireworks are to take place at the time of the implosion.

im sure ebay has ALOT of stuff, other than that check out google.com

Hey guys, check out http://www.leavinglv.net for a photo journal of the demolition of the Stardust Resort/Casino! It's friggin awesome.

According to the site mentioned immediately above, leavinglv.net, signs have gone up in the area announcing road closures between 2-5 a.m. on the 13th. The site reasonably surmises that that's when the implosion is planned.

The 'Dust was the first place I ever stayed at in Las Vegas. I turned 12 while on the grand tour of the States my parents took my younger sisters and me on. In Las Vegas we stayed at the 'Dust. My mother wanted to demonstrate what a losing proposition gambling is so she let each of us play a nickel slot for one pull. I won 15 cents. Lesson learned!

Fast forward years and I'm up late in my room on the 32nd floor of the new Stardust Tower watching the Sands implosion.

After the old motel section in the back lot was torn down in the 90's there was no more $25 a night rooms and I drifted away but I still have my Stardust Slot Club T-shirt. Now we're Harrah's people.

Hey guys, I live in Las Vegas and work at the Mirage. The planned implosion has been the topic of conversation all day. It's scheduled to come down tonight (or early tommorow morning, however you want to look at it) at approx 2:00am. PST.

And as regards to another comment above. Most memoribilla including blackjack tables, cards, etc etc. With the exception of Neon signs are sold through Boyd Gaming, the owners of stardust. Before the place actually closed its doors you were able to buy them in the Casino. As of now im not sure check out Boyd Gaming and it might help you. If your interested in neon signs, all Las Vegas old signs are taken to the " Neon Graveyard" just outside of Vegas. Don't know the exact name.

Hope this helps and if anyones ever in Vegas come on over to the Mirage and say hello!

It is sad to see the STARDUST go, not only was it a Vegas landmark and a big part of Vegas history, it was also a part of my personal family history.
My Mom was a singer at the Stardust back in her day.

ok everybody, it's offical.
As of 2:30am Vegas time, the Stardust in no more. I'm sad to see it go, but I can only hope that the new hotel is just as good as Stardust.

The Stardust brings back many wonderful memories....we were just married, young, broke and just starting out. We wanted to go to Las Vegas and have some fun and stayed at the Stardust Annex. It was not fancy, just clean and a acceptable place to stay. We did have fun and later on in years we came back to Las Vegas but stayed in much better and fancier hotels. The Stardust as well as the all the others will live on, if not, just in memories. We will miss you!!!!

It's sad for me to see the Stardust go! I've never stayed there, but I've gambled there and we loved to eat at their seafood buffet. This is just so sad!

I want to say - thank you for this!

I rarely comment on blogs but yours I had to stop and say Great Blog!!
