Stardust to Become Dust
07:28 AM PT, Jan 4 2006
One of the last landmarks of old Vegas, The Stardust, is coming down. In a press release, Boyd Gaming, the current owners, announce plans to tear down the Stardust to build Echelon Place. A planned cost of $4 billion, Echelon Place will cover 63 acres mixing a casino, convention facilities, restaurants, nightclubs and shopping. In addition to regular rooms the new resort will contain a boutique Shangri-LA hotel within it. The new resort is expected to open in 2010. Meanwhile, during the early stages of getting permits and plans in place, The Stardust is expected to remain open throughout 2006 with demolition planned for 2007. For those of you who have seen the movie Casino, the Stardust is the casino whose history parallels that Hollywood tale. Is there anyplace left for Steve & Eydie to play?

But here's the real question: implosion or no implosion?

When is the implosion date?
Such a shame we don't embrace our history here.

You people who look forward to a great landmark coming down. Should not even be allowed in the state. Dennis C. Connolly

I'm sad - I heard about the planned closure in October 2005 and headed straight there to play, eat and laugh like a kid at the jumping foutains.
Sure, we're all dazzled by the likes of Bellagio but if every hotel/casino were just like that, what kind of fun would Vegas be?
Long live hotels like the Stardust, Circus Circus, the Sahara and the great friendly places downtown!

It is a great landmark and we are honoring it as well as the many other forgotten great pieces of time and art in Las Vegas history. We are shooting a documentary about how Las Vegas recycles itself and about the devastating but amazing impact that has on society.
We have been told that the Stardust will not light up again after Halloween 2006. It goes dark at noon (or so) on November 1st, 2006. The implosion is to be in early 2007 (Jan-Feb) but they haven't announced it yet. This is the info that has been give to us, however that could change.
We are looking for interesting views and comments for our documentary about the phenomenon of destroying history and art and how Vegas has been a pioneer of such. Yet we also point out the positive side...If you are interested or feel you have anything to contribute please write us at info@mcentertainmentinc.com
Thanks and I hope this info is helpful!

I Got to stay at the Stardust from July 17-25/2006.
The 9 Story East Tower had been closed several months ago, but had re-opened it July 17-24th for the Convention I was attending.I was on the 6th Floor in Room 2653. This Room overlooked the old Royal Nevada Pool. On the afternoon of July 24th as I was prepairing to move over to the big tower for my last night, I was told that I am Officially the last person who would ever check out of the east tower.
I only had the Opportunity to stay at The Stardust once, but I will always remember my stay.
Our first night there the Power in most of the Hotel went out for about 2 hours because of an Electrical Storm. I found it amusing that there was no Power on any of the Hotel Room areas, but the Gaming floor was up and running with no sign of a Power failure.
It is a real shame that Las Vegas has to destroy its History in order to keep up to date. But lets face it, its all about money. Where else in the World can you build a 32 story building in 1991 that cost Millions, and Implode it in 2007.
I am a collector of Stardust memorabilia. If interested please feel free to have a look at http://mycollectibles.kaboodle.com/pcouperstar/my-stardust-casino-colection.html
If you have stayed at the Stardust and have any stories, please feel free to email them to me at pcouperstar@sympatico.ca I would be more then happy to post them on my site.

Myself and two of my girlfriends made a pilgrimage to the Stardust for our last stay at this great Hotel when we heard it was slated for closing and eventual implosion. I know some people don't consider it an honor to want to come back and be an eyewitnesses to the implosion, but everyone has their own opinion. And mine is that it is most certainly an HONOR to watch the implosion, to day a final goodbye, to watch as a piece of history fall by the wayside. So, if at all possible, myself and my two girlfriends will be making every attempt to be there to witness the Stardust come down, to pay our respects and say goodbye to a Grand Hotel.

The Stardust IS (was) Las Vegas. One of the first, run by the mob, never tried to cater to the family crowd. It was a place to get away, to gamble, to see a good show, have a reasonable buffet. I liked to visit the other casinos just to see how the other half lived, but always wound up back at the Stardust. I really have no idea what I'm going to do on my vacations now. Maybe the Orleans, but it won't be the same.

Vegas sucks now. Corporate nickel & dimers own the place. The last two years have gotten so bad with inflation. I stayed at the 'Dust this past April for the NAB Convention. Every year, all of the evening parties were held there and of course, friends from around the globe would meet nightly at the Terrace Bar for drinks. I'm going to try to get out there for the implosion if that date is accurate.

I also would love to be there for the big day. If anyone knows when that day will be, please let me know. Thanks

Posted by: katie | January 23, 2007 at 02:23 PM
There is no confirmation on that date as of yet.
Posted by: Bill | January 23, 2007 at 02:33 PM
From what I have read over the Internet they wont be telling anyone the date and it will happen in the middle of the night I'm including the piece that I got this information from.
"" The implosion of the 48-year-old, 1,500-room casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip is scheduled to take place in the middle of the night in the middle of March, a source at Boyd Gaming tells GlobeSt.com. The company isn’t saying exactly when the implosion will take place for crowd control purposes, but says it plans to capture the event on tape.""
