Boardwalk Closes

Yesterday, after 34 years on the Strip, the Boardwalk Hotel -Casino closed. The land that the Boardwalk occupies is set to be part of MGM-Mirage's massive 66 acre, $5 billion, Project CityCenter resort hotel condominium complex. Souvenir hunters will be happy to know that a public auction of the Boardwalk's contents is set for January 21.
While the Boardwalk is to be demolished slowly, by coincidence, tomorrow does offer a chance to see a casino implosion: Castaways. Located on Boulder Highway the long closed casino is ready to be destroyed by explosives at 7 am Wednesday. There has been no announcement as to the future plans for that land which is owned by the Station Casinos.

What a sad day . . . for people who enjoyed ridiculing the Boardwalk for the pathetic dump that it was. There are "classic" casinos I'll be sad to see go (like the Stardust, for example) but I doubt there will be much in the way of questioning the decision to demolish the Boardwalk, unless it's "what took so long?"
